The International Future Energy Challenge Workshop

Travel grant

The IEEE Power Electronics Society and IEEE Industry Applications Society will host a workshop for the participants of the International Future Energy Challenge during the IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) in February 2003. The two day workshop will be held the morning of Monday, February 10 and the afternoon of Tuesday, February 11.  The workshop will focus on the 2003 event, including final competition setups, resolving technical concerns of participants, and safety. There will also be guest speakers from industry to discuss the latest innovations in fuel cells, power electronics, and motor drives. A representative from each team will be encouraged to give a brief overview of their team and technical progress.

The schools that have been accepted to participate in the 2003 IFEC are eligible to apply for a travel grant which will support a stipend for one team member (a student) to participate in the workshop. The travel grant will be awarded upon the evaluation of a proposal addressing how the results of the competition will be used in promoting power electronics education to members of underrepresented minority groups and to primary and secondary school students. The proposal must be no longer than three pages, single-column, double space. The proposal should clearly indicate a timeline and commitments related to the school's proposed activities. A broader regional or national impact would also be very favorable in the proposal approach.

The following are possible ideas that can be addressed in your proposal:

- Workshop for high school teachers in your city - Seminars and demonstrations for primary school students - Involvement in energy based projects with high school students - Mentoring students and minorities for a careers in energy renewable systems - Teaching related short courses in minority based schools - Making the technology of your project available for underrepresented people - Preparation of web-page and printed material to make people aware of energy conservation and new energy technolgies - Any other innovative way of addressing dissemination and diversity will be considered
